Colfax, Washington · Congregation Est. 1872

A landmark on
Main Street.

You'll know Plymouth by its freestanding bell tower and the hand, cross, and dove carved into its face. A small congregation, gathered in love and Biblical truths, meeting where Main Street bends.

Our Story

Rooted in the town, still standing on Main Street.

Plymouth Church was founded in 1872 by the Rev. Dr. Cushing Eells, whose name is carried today by Colfax's Eells Park, once the site of the church's first building. More than a century and a half later, Plymouth is still Colfax's oldest congregation — and the only church left standing on Main Street itself.

The building has weathered floods, decades, and a changing town, the way the wheat fields around it weather every season. What hasn't changed is the reason people keep walking through the door: a small, honest community – you become part of our FAMILY as soon as you enter!

Our Pastor

Rev. Michael Birnbaum

Michael leads worship and pastoral care at Plymouth. He's glad to meet visitors before or after the Sunday service — feel free to introduce yourself and say hello.

Feel free to contact Pastor Birnbaum at 509-710-3283 for pastor care needs.

On Our Face

Three symbols, cast in steel.

Above the entry, three shapes are set into the wall of the sanctuary itself — a hand, a cross, and a dove. They're the first thing most people ask about, and the simplest summary we have of what happens inside.

The open hand symbol carved into Plymouth Church's facade

The Open Hand

Welcome and blessing — a hand held open rather than closed, offered to whoever walks through the door.

The cross symbol, set with small panes of colored glass, carved into Plymouth Church's facade

The Cross

Faith in Christ, held plainly — set with a running line of small colored panes, the one bit of stained glass on an otherwise quiet facade.

The dove symbol carved into Plymouth Church's facade

The Dove

The Spirit at work in the congregation — wings raised in three points, descending over the doorway.

What We Believe
"Ours is the tradition of a free church, gathered under the headship of Christ and bound to others by love and faith — always faithful to our Biblical heritage."

The Congregational Way

As a faith-community we affirm traditional Christ-centered values and principles, yet welcome all who enter!

Plymouth Church is historically Congregational yet independent in our commitment to living out our faith in the context of our family-centered Colfax community.

This Season at Plymouth

Small, and rebuilding on purpose.

Worship in the Chapel

The congregation currently gathers in the chapel downstairs while we work toward reopening the main sanctuary — a smaller room, but a full congregation's worth of welcome.

Growing Through Small Groups

Like the early church, we believe small groups — not size — are how a congregation actually grows. New groups are forming; there's room for you in one.

A Music Ministry Taking Shape

We're expanding music in worship and building a presence online, so that Colfax — and family further away — can stay connected to Plymouth. Our lead musician, Matt Scholz, is well known for his musical leadership not only at Plymouth but throughout the county.
